Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
I received an anxious phone call from a CLHO member. Their historical society had been approached by a local bank requesting the use of a photo from their collection. The bank wished to use the photo in promotional materials and was willing to provide a “donation” but needed to confirm the agreement immediately. The member did not want to miss this opportunity but how much to charge? Was a “donation” the proper thing to ask for? What were the copyright and tax ramifications? Should they ask for photo credit? Would they be selling away their intellectual property? Time was short. The historical society turned to the League for help.
In a week, a museum was to hold its annual living history fair. This was the major event of the year and their most important revenue generating program. Just when the museum was putting on the final touches, the director was given the dreadful news. Several of the living history re-enactors would not be attending since they had been double-booked - sorry. How was the museum director going to find historically accurate educational programs at such a late date? Who had their finger on the pulse of Connecticut’s history community and could advise them? The museum called the League.
Every day, dozens of people call the League office for help. Many are members who know we are a valuable resource. Others are not members, but simply people looking for answers. The League acts as a clearinghouse of information. Obviously, the CLHO staff and volunteer board know a lot about what's going on in Connecticut’s history field. The League assumes the role of helping people find the appropriate resource they are looking for, promotes professional standards, serves as a network for the exchange of information, and advances historical interests at the state level. If it were not for the League, who else could these organizations turn to?
The League programs, publications, and professional services do not come cheaply. Income from ticket sales and memberships, even in a normal year, does not cover our expenses; we must rely on contributions to help bridge the gap. That is why I ask you to help us keep the breadth and quality of our programs intact by making your year-end contribution today. The success of the Annual Appeal will enable the League to maintain the standards of excellence in professional assistance and educational programs you have come to expect from us. If every member gave $100 to the Annual Appeal we would reach our goal.
Your Annual Appeal gift may be made in the form of cash or check and your generosity will be promptly acknowledged and recognized in the Bulletin newsletter. And of course, all donations are tax-deductible. You can download an Annual Appeal form by clicking here. Thank you for helping us serve you and the Connecticut history community for the future!
On behalf of all the dedicated history volunteers and professional throughout Connecticut who will benefit from your generosity, I wish to offer my warmest gratitude. Thank you in advance for your generous response.
Best wishes,
Priscilla Brendler
Executive Director
