Full-Time Senior Educator

Discovering Amistad

The organization Discovering Amistad is in need of a senior educator that will organize and participate in the teaching of students and adults in classrooms, onboard the ship, and in other settings. This is a full time, yearlong position. Responsibilities of the senior educator include:

  • Scheduling school visits and programming throughout the year; managing the calendar of all educational programming.
  • Lead in-class teaching programs throughout the academic year.
  • Oversee the work of other discovering Amistad educators.
  • Provide support and resources for the educational team.
  • Work with teachers and administrators to get teacher/student feedback after Amistad programming.
  • Provide written reports on Amistad activities for grant funders.
  • Serve as liaison between educational team, Discovering Amistad board, and captain and crew.
  • Establish and lead educational stations for students onboard the ship.
  • Train select crew members to assist in educational programming
  • Speak on the history of the Amistad during board presentations/talks/tours during public sails, private events, and open dockside tours.
  • Serve as one of Discovering Amistad's spokespersons during radio/television interviews, receptions, special events, etc.

Exhibit Developer

The Connecticut Historical Society Museum and Library

The Connecticut Historical Society Museum and Library is seeking a full time Exhibit Developer. The exhibit developer is a key member of the team responsible for the development, design, production, installation, and maintenance of on-site, off-site and traveling exhibitions and other interpretive projects. They will lead project teams as assigned. They will play a pivotal role in helping the organization realize its mission to connect audiences with the story of Connecticut. The qualifications for the position include a Bachelor's degree in History, American Studies, Material Culture, Museum Studies or a related field; knowledge of programs including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Adobe Creative Cloud; Two years experience in exhibition development at an institution such as a children's, history, or science museum, or in a design firm that has created interactive and audience-centered exhibitions; knowledge of current museum practices; experience in school or museum setting; and familiarity and knowledge of library and museum collections. Research Center Assistant 

The Connecticut Historical Society Museum and Library

The Connecticut Historical Society Museum and Library is seeking to fill 3 to 4 RCA positions. The individual in this position is the representative of CHS to the Public at the Welcome Desk, in the galleries and in the Waterman Research Center. This person also assists in the daily and occasional tasks that are essential for the smooth operation of CHS including audience evaluation, collection-related projects and various administrative duties that benefit CHS as a whole.  The candidate should have the ability to communicate clearly with a variety of constituents, have a proficiency with computers and ability to learn new software, willingness to foster and make sales, flexibly, openness, and a sincere interest and ability to complete detail oriented work, and B.A. is preferred. Summer Educator/ Pardee-Morris House Coordinator

The New Haven Museum 

The New Haven Museum is seeking a coordinator for its historic c. 1780 Pardee-Morris House and education outreach activities for the 2020 summer season. The coordinator is responsible for all activities at the property, including opening/closing the house, giving tours, and planning and overseeing the Twilight Concert series, lectures and family programs. The house is open Sundays, 12-4, and for special events such as concerts and lectures. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Museum's education director with summer programs, tabling at community events (such as festivals and farmers markets), posting social media updates for the Museum, sourcing talent and speakers for the 2021 season, and helping to create education and promotional materials. 

Requirements: B.A. or B.S. degree coursework in progress; completed degree preferred in the following areas: History, American Studies, Material Culture, Historic Preservation, Museum Education or related field. Previous experience teaching and/or giving tours. One or more years working with children and adults in an educational setting that includes in a school as a teacher or instructor, and after-school programmer or summer camp counselor. Strong communication, computer and social media skills required. Experience with arts and craft activities preferred. 

Preferred state date: May 18, 2020. Position is part-time, 15 - 25 hours a week, through August 30, 2020. Must be able to work Sundays, some Saturdays, weekdays, and evenings required. Salary range: $3,500 - $5,500.

Seasonal Historic Site Manager

The Lebanon Historical Society

The Lebanon Historical Society is seeking a part-time (8-16 hours per week from late April to mid-October) seasonal Historic Site Manager for the Jonathan Trumbull Jr. House Museum in Lebanon, CT. Primary responsibilities include opening the house and leading public tours, leading school programs in conjunction with the member organizations of the Lebanon History Consortium and planning and installing small exhibits and displays. An interest in history, willingness to learn and the ability to share information with visitors in an engaging way are required. Previous experience teaching or working at a history museum or a bachelor's degree in history or education are highly desired but not required.

Archivist and Research Librarian

The Friends of the Wood Memorial Library & Museum 

The Friends of Wood Memorial Library & Museum (The Wood) seeks a qualified Archivist and Research Librarian to oversee The Wood's procurement and maintenance of the archives, historical and artistic collections, and library. These collections should be utilized to integrate with and enhance programming, exhibits, publications and educational offerings. The Archivist and Research Librarian will report to the Executive Director.

This is a part-time position of 12 hours per week, which includes specific office hours and flexible hours for uninterrupted work and to meet with donors and researchers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Collections Management

- Maintain inventory and location of collections; maintain a disaster plan

- Seek donations that will enhance and complete our collections and determine relevancy of potential donations

- Help develop, oversee and implement policies, procedures and related paperwork for accessioning, processing and deaccessioning of items

- Encourage access to collections while maintaining care and protection through professional best practices

- Fulfill research requests and aid and support other staff for projects, programs, exhibits and events

Strategic Planning:

- Help to expand and enhance the Friends’ audience and visibility as a historical research center

- Work collaboratively to develop and implement an annual calendar that enhances the unique collections of the Friends, and takes an integrated approach, when appropriate, to connect programming, exhibits, educational programs, etc.

Staff and Volunteer Engagement:

- Take part in relevant committees; including but not limited to collections committee and oral history committee

- Train staff, appropriate committees and volunteers on provisional acquisition forms and policies

- Recruit, train and oversee volunteers and identify volunteer projects

Skills Required:
1. MS in Library Science or MA in Museum Studies with certification in Archives and Preservation.
2. Be an organized, responsible, detail
oriented individual.
3. Use professional standards and best practices to approach the acquisition, presentation and preservation of library and archival materials.
4. Be aware of, and encourage the use of, professional standards for exhibits.
5. Possess the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively.
6. Display a professional manner and be able to work collaboratively with volunteers.
7. Possess excellent verbal and communication skills (including public speaking) and excellent writing and editing skills.
8. Exhibit competency in, and awareness of, current and emerging technologies.

Knights of Columbus Supreme Council Archives Summer Hire (Paid Internship) 

Knights of Columbus Supreme Council Archives 

The Archives Summer Hire will assist the Supreme Council Archivist in collecting, preserving, and sharing the Knights of Columbus’ 135+ year legacy, allowing both members and the general public to forge meaningful connections with the organization’s history. This is a unique opportunity for those who have an interest in fraternal organizations, religious history, and/or archives in museums.  This position provides a unique opportunity to work in an evolving corporate archive that recently has reorganized, is migrating its database to ArchivesSpace, and is migrating finding aids online.  The work of the summer hire will be integral in processing the collections and establishing foundational processes and procedures for the archive to move forward. Preference will be given to LIS or History graduate students, but undergraduates will be considered.  The position is full time Monday – Friday, 8:00 – 4:30 from June 1 to July 31, 2020.  This is a paid internship opportunity, out of state candidates are eligible for a housing and travel stipend, in-state candidates are eligible for a parking stipend.

Museum Interpreter

Connecticut Landmarks

Connecticut Landmarks is seeking a part time, seasonal (12-14 hours per week) Museum interpreters for their historic properties, including Bellamy-Ferriday House and Garden in Bethlehem; Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry; Butler-McCook House and Garden and Isham-Terry House in Hartford; Hempsted Houses in New London; and Phelps-Hatheway House in Suffield. Interpreters greet visitors and share properties with them, give guided tours, and assist with school programs, public programs and special events. Houses are open seasonally, including weekends. $11 per hour to start. Paid training begins in March. Strong candidates are good storytellers, like to meet and engage with new people and enjoy learning.

The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford (JHSGH), located conveniently in West Hartford, CT, a vibrant community in central Connecticut, seeks an enthusiastic leader with proven experience to serve as its Executive Director. Part Time Assistant Horticulturist

Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden, Bethlehem, CT

Connecticut Landmarks is seeking a part time, seasonal (15-20 hours per week from April to December) Assistant Horticulturalist to oversee the preservation and maintenance of the plant collections within the historic gardens of the Bellamy-Ferriday House and Garden. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and experience caring for flowers and plants and all aspects of horticulture and landscape maintenance. The Assistant Horticulturist will assist the Horticulturist with all aspects of horticulture and landscape management. Associate's degree in Horticulture, Natural Area Management, Biology or related field is preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be able to work in varying weather conditions, bend, pull, push, stoop, dig, and stand for long periods of time.

Site Administrator

Hempsted Houses, New London, CT

Connecticut Landmarks is seeking a Site Administrator  to oversee the Hempsted Houses in New London, CT. The landmark property tells the story of three great populations whose paths collided in early New London: the Native Americans who were here from the beginning, the Europeans who arrived in the 1600s, and the enslaved Africans who were brought to New London at the same time. Connecticut Landmarks seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial museum professional to take this exceptional site to its next level of growth.
