It’s not easy to divide the many responsibilities associated with running a historical society and museum between members of the board, paid and volunteer staff, and consultants.  We're here to help get everyone on the same page and working together as a team.

During this fast-paced two hour workshop, we'll help you answer questions including:

• How do we hire the best consultant for the project?

• Who makes the final decision on hiring?

  • What does a good working relationship between the director andboard look like?
  • What can we do to facilitate the relationship starting with the interview process?

Join Jennifer Eifrig, principal at Museview 360, Catherine K. Fields, Executive Director of the Litchfield Historical Society, and Marge Smith, Curator of the Kent Historical Society for a half-day program designed to help participants define roles and build better relationships at their instituions. Each presenter will share their insights on hiring a first staff member, managing the transition from being a board-run organization to one with permanent staff, ensuring good communications between the Board and the Executive Director, and locating, hiring and working with museum consultants. There will be ample time for questions and answers.

Directors! Consultants! & Boards! Oh My! is part of StEPs-CT, a program of Connecticut Humanities and the Connecticut League of History Organizations in partnership with the Connecticut Historical Society.  This program is designed to address issues contained in both the Mission, Vision & Governance and Management sections of the StEPs Program. StEPs was created by the American Association for State and Local History with funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
